The Santa Susana Mountains lie to the north and the Simi Hills to the west and north. If your home is near the foothills, tell dispatch, because slope and drainage can affect where water collects.

Northridge, ZIPs 91324, 91325 and 91330

Northridge sits east of Chatsworth, with Porter Ranch and Granada Hills to the north and Winnetka and Chatsworth to the west. Much of its housing grew from postwar tract building, and the 1994 earthquake lifted some structures off their foundations.

Porter Ranch, ZIP 91326

Porter Ranch occupies the hilly northwest tip of the Valley at about 1,280 feet, with the Santa Susana Mountains to the north. Housing began around 1960 to 1963, and newer tracts followed after the area was annexed by Los Angeles in 1965.

Canoga Park, ZIPs 91303 and 91304

Canoga Park borders Chatsworth to the north, Winnetka to the east, West Hills to the west and Woodland Hills to the south. It was annexed by Los Angeles in 1917 and has a mix of older homes and multi-unit buildings along its main streets.

West Hills, ZIP 91307

West Hills formed as a neighborhood in 1987 from western Canoga Park, and part of ZIP 91304 also reaches it. It covers 8.5 square miles at about 899 feet, with the Chatsworth Reservoir area to the north and Bell Canyon in Ventura County to the west.

Winnetka, ZIP 91306

Winnetka started in 1922 as a poultry colony and now sits between Chatsworth to the north and Woodland Hills to the south. The 2010 Census counted renters in 42% of its housing.

We sometimes get calls from near Twin Lakes, an unincorporated Los Angeles County community north of Chatsworth, and from the Chatsworth Reservoir area. We do not have dedicated pages for them.

How geography changes water problems

Chatsworth has a Mediterranean climate, with rain falling mostly from November through March and dry summers. Water problems cluster in the wet months, when roof leaks and drainage issues show up, but pipe failures and appliance leaks happen all year.

On hillsides, runoff moves downhill and can reach garages and lower levels. On the valley floor, water tends to spread across flat slabs and into wall bottoms. Older tracts may have aging supply lines, while newer tracts have different materials and layouts.
